The social news snippets give your blog post a couple of strong incoming links. The social bookmarks provide some link juice to your social news snippets. It's like a powerup in a video game, nitrous oxide to a racing car, baking powder to a cake... well... you get the idea.
The Ping calls the spiders to the RSS feeds of your social bookmark pages. (Cant find the RSS feed? Check your profile page that holds all of your bookmarks and ping that RSS feed instead.) The SEO benefit comes shortly.
(And no... you can't do it the other way round. If I already spidered your blog post on my own, you won't get any additional SEO benefit by Jiggling the Web. So it's important that you do the "social media" promotion right after you post.)
It's because spiders like me get "excited" about finding links from your bookmarks to the social news sites. They want to find out what all the commotion is about - that you've created - and finally arrive at your original blog post.
What happens is the process of ping -> bookmark -> social news -> blog post - acts as leverage, a catalyst that will usually boost the original blog post to the top of the rankings.
If you've gone after a mid to long tail search term, and included the search term in the social news post titles, you'll probably end up owning a top search engine position for that keyword phrase.
Finally, to get the maximum search engine benefit, it's important to do the steps in order. Blog, news, bookmark and ping. And it's best to do them quickly. One right after the other, within minutes of each other.
So you might want to open your text editor and write up your post. Write what you want to say in the snippet pages as well as the the bookmarks. Then just copy and paste in a hurry.
But do keep in mind... Different social media are used for different things. Be careful to understand the type of content that each one wants.
Social news - Propeller, Digg, Reddit
Social hosting - Weebly, Squidoo, Hubpages, WetPaint
Bookmarking - Diigo, Mr. Wong, Delicious, Google, Mixx
Social networking community - Myspace, Facebook
Sitemarking - StumbleUpon
Microblogging - Twitter
Social video - Youtube, Metacafe
Part V - Ready... Spin... Jiggle
Now it's time to go past the theory and get into the nitty gritty. This is the meaty stuff that will make you stick in my web.
Spinning the Web
You only need to do this stuff once. Think of it as setting up, getting ready to Jiggle.
* Set up your social media accounts
* Use a Wordpress blog for posting
* Claim your blog in Technorati
* Subscribe to your blog in My Yahoo
* Subscribe to your blog in Google Reader
* Subscribe with your favorite newsreader
Attract the Spider (Jiggle)
These are the steps you've already learned. Here they are in bullet form.
* Write your blog post, snippets, bookmarks
* Put your exact keyword phrase in the titles
* Make a blog post of your excellent content
* Post social news snippets about your post
* Social bookmark your news story
* Click the share button if they have one
* Ping the feed of the social bookmark
Getting Stuck in the Web (SERPs)
If you attempted to Jiggle a long tail search phrase, you probably don't need to do the "Getting Stuck" steps listed below. (You can skip ahead to the "Wrap Up" section.) But if you're going after a mid tail phrase with some decent competition, then you'll want to spin the threads... I mean boost your original post with a few more links.
The way search engines work, is that they Spider, Index and Sort. It's easy for me to find your post and add it to my index. It's weathering the sorting process - back at the lair - that's the tricky part. (This is where I separate the spammy auto posted gnats from the juicy content.)
Wait 24 hours...
Then link to your blog with a freebie hosting service or blogging page. It could be a Squidoo, Hubpages, Weebly, Webs or Quizilla type of a thing.
Share your blog post using Google reader. Refresh your My Yahoo page. Bookmark your original post a couple of times. Ping the RSS feeds or your profile page. Link to the post with another "static" web property. Manually re-ping your blog using Technorati only.
Wait another 24 - 48 hours...
Link to the post with another social hosting, free blogging, or web property. Bookmark your original post on two or three services. Ping their RSS feeds, or your profile page.
These two extra steps don't seem like much, but they really make a difference to your stickability in the rankings. It works because the search engines detect a link build up over time. It's not just a one day wonder. There are more links appearing in days two and three after the basic Jiggle.
Part VI - The "Wrap Up"
You may have heard or read similar stories like Jiggling the Web. I'm not surprised, as my friend Michael Campbell has been teaching this strategy for the past three years. So it's no wonder that many of the tactics have leaked out.
Here's something that only his clients know. It's the reason why Jiggling the Web has long term staying power in the search engines and the other strategies don't. Lean in really close to your computer and I'll whisper it in your ear...
What? You never saw a talking spider before?
Here it is...
Remove the ping list from your blogging software. It's the real secret behind Jiggling the Web. Whoever pings first gets first crawl. This is critical.
